Chery Prepares Electric MPV to Rival Denza D9

Maxus sells two luxury electric MPV models, but its sales figures still lag far behind Denza's.
KatadataOTO – The competition for electric cars in Indonesia is getting fiercer in 2025 with the arrival of various new models. Some brands are even entering the premium car segment.
One of them is Maxus. The brand entered Indonesia as a premium electric-powered Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV).
Japanese manufacturers do not yet have a luxury electric-powered MPV. However, there is already another strong competitor, the Denza D9, a product of the BYD sub-brand.
Throughout 2025, Denza has recorded positive results. In the January-November period this year, Denza's retail sales (distribution from dealers to consumers) reached 7,047 units.
Denza currently only has one model, the D9. This achievement was thanks to its competitive price of IDR 950 million on the road in Jakarta.
In contrast, Maxus brought in two luxury electric-powered MPVs, the Mifa 7 and Mifa 9.
In the same period, the Maxus Mifa 7 and Mifa 9 only recorded retail sales of 142 units.
This is despite Maxus offering two options with relatively lower prices, starting from IDR 750 million to over IDR 800 million.
Maxus sales in retail reached its lowest point in June 2025. At that time, only one unit was delivered to a consumer.
Meanwhile, Maxus's highest achievement was in September 2025. Maxus's retail sales figure was 27 units.
There are several factors that may have played a role in the large sales gap for luxury MPVs between Maxus and BYD.
For example, brand recognition. BYD is known globally and consumers are potentially more familiar with it, making the Denza D9 a primary consideration when choosing an electric-powered MPV.
Although Maxus is under the Indomobil Group with a complete dealer network, it seems the new brand name is still unfamiliar to many.
Maxus has a big task ahead to set its strategy in facing the fierce competition in the electric car market.
Furthermore, in 2026, there is still a chance that a number of manufacturers will introduce electric MPVs in the premium segment, making domestic competition even tighter.
Total: 142 units
