New Car Sales in July 2025 Rose, While 12 Brands Actually Fell

KatadataOTO – The automotive industry is believed to continue facing a number of challenges due to economic uncertainty and weakening purchasing power. This is reflected in the sales figures for cars in Indonesia throughout July 2025.

Although there appears to be an improvement and growth from June, data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) shows that some brands actually experienced a decline.

For example, Honda. The brand with the H logo was knocked out of the top three with retail sales (distribution from dealers to consumers) of 5,003, down from 5,238 units in June.

The Chinese manufacturer, Chery, also experienced a significant decline from 2,150 units to 1,705 units throughout July 2025.

Hyundai is still trying to stay in the top 10 for retail car sales in Indonesia, despite experiencing a decline to 1,402 units from the previous month's achievement of 1,721 units.

Looking at these sales figures, it seems the situation is not yet improving. Gaikindo recently signaled that it might revise its 2025 target.

Economists believe the stagnant sales are a result of pressure on purchasing power and changing preferences.

“Bank Indonesia (BI) consumer data in our presentation shows that the current economic conditions index has weakened, especially the job availability index (which has fallen below 100),” said Josua Pardede, Chief Economist of Permata Bank to KatadataOTO, on Monday (11/08).

As a result, people are holding back on spending on durable goods, and the allocation of income to installments has increased.
