KatadataOTO – PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) acknowledged that their motorcycle sales experienced a decline in January 2025. Several factors contributed to this condition.

For your information, AISI announced that motorcycle sales for the January 2025 period decreased. There was a correction of about 5 percent lower than the previous month.

“First, we see that January has fewer working days. Then, there was still a wait-and-see attitude regarding the 12 percent tax and the local tax surcharge,” said Thomas Wijaya in Jakarta (06/03).

The decision on the 12 percent tax and the new local tax surcharge was only announced in February 2025. As a result, vehicle marketing is gradually returning to normal.

Additionally, several regional heads decided to postpone the implementation of the local tax surcharge. This allowed manufacturers, including AHM, to hold off on price increases.

It was reported that Honda motorcycle sales in January were around 400 thousand units. Meanwhile, the national market for the same period reached a total of 557,191 units.

This means AHM controls over 70 percent of the domestic motorcycle market.

To boost sales, manufacturers generally take advantage of the momentum from the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which falls at the end of March 2025.

In addition, AHM is also hoping for momentum from the agricultural sector. Thus, both moments are expected to increase interest in purchasing new vehicles.

“Yes, we are hoping for two moments, the first is Eid. Second, we are also hoping for the harvest period in March – April because the potential is there,” Thomas later explained.

Regarding the dominant best-selling models from AHM, it was mentioned that scooters still reign supreme. This is despite AISI data showing that the sport bike market experienced a significant increase in January 2025.

At the IIMS 2025 event, for example, AHM successfully secured 1,133 vehicle orders (SPK). The dominant models ordered were the Honda Vario Series with 345 units.

The second best-selling model was the Honda Stylo 160 with 217 units. Unfortunately, they did not disclose the sales figures for their sport bike models.

Meanwhile, in January 2025, Yamaha Indonesia just launched the latest versions of the R25 and MT25. Several changes were made to entice potential customers in the country.
