KatadataOTO – Currently, the use of Electric Vehicles (EV) has become increasingly massive. Especially in the DKI Jakarta area, which is inhabited by an urban community.

Many electric cars, motorcycles, and buses pass through the streets of the Capital City every day. All are used for mobility needs.

Of course, this phenomenon brings many things into people's lives. Including the risk or threat of EV fires.

For this reason, the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI Jakarta is trying to study the various threats that arise.

Such as by holding a seminar and exhibition for battery safety stakeholders in 2025, at the Office of the DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat).

“I hope this activity can produce concrete recommendations for the formation of national and regional standards in dealing with battery fire situations,” said Rano Karno, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta on the official website of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, Wednesday (03/12).

Rano revealed that the government has issued Presidential Regulation Number 79 of 2023. Then there is also Presidential Instruction Number 7 of 2022.

All of these policies, it turns out, encourage or accelerate the use of electric vehicles in various sectors.

However, this development must be balanced with the readiness of a relevant safety system. Moreover, the characteristics of battery fires in electric motorcycles and cars are different from conventional fires.

If a fire engulfs an EV, it can cause explosions and accelerate the spread of heat. It then risks occurring in open spaces or parking areas.

Therefore, Rano believes that these efforts must be equipped with clear guidelines for firefighters.

He also hopes that the above activities can produce recommendations for Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in extinguishing battery fires. Especially for electric vehicles in DKI Jakarta.
