KatadataOTO – The Police have finally closed the road section towards the Mako Brimob (Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters) in Kwitang, Central Jakarta. This measure was taken to prevent further mass protests that began last night.

The blockade has been in place starting from Tugu Tani, Central Jakarta. Motorists heading to Kwitang will be diverted towards Cikini.

Despite the blockade, traffic flow in the Cikini and Menteng areas is not as busy as usual. The streets are quiet with few vehicles passing, whereas they are usually crowded on a workday.

The police have also issued an appeal to the public via social media to avoid the Kwitang area. This measure is expected to be sufficient to warn residents who intend to travel.

Unrest Had Spread

The unrest itself had actually spread earlier this morning, Friday (29/08), following the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver who was run over by a tactical vehicle. The incident ignited the crowd's emotions, causing the situation to heat up.

The protest disrupted traffic flow around the location and caused long traffic jams. Two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicle drivers passing through were forced to turn back and find alternative routes because the road was closed.

Even Transjakarta buses were affected by this incident. Police officers on guard at the location have secured the area and are trying to calm the crowd to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Reporting from Antara, authorities are still on standby around Jalan Otista to anticipate potential further clashes. The Police also urge the public to avoid the area for the sake of smooth traffic flow and mutual safety.

If you must travel, it is recommended to use public transportation modes such as the LRT, MRT, and TransJakarta. However, be sure to allow for extra time as congestion is still expected at several points.

Meanwhile, if you wish to use a private vehicle, it is advisable to find alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion. Thus, it is hoped that your journey can remain safe even though road conditions are unstable.
