Although it just received a refresh this year, the X55-II did not significantly help BAIC's sales in Indonesia.
KatadataOTO – BAIC is one of the Chinese brands that entered the Indonesian market without bringing electric cars. They chose to sell gasoline and hybrid-engine Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV).
In an effort to boost sales, BAIC introduced a refresh of their compact SUV, the X55-II.
In 2024, this model only sold 70 units. With the presence of the newest variant and the BJ30 Hybrid, BAIC is targeting sales of 50-60 units per month in 2025.
However, after being refreshed in May 2025, the sales performance of the X55-II remained stagnant and did not increase significantly.
Referring to Gaikindo data, as of November, only three units of the X55-II compact SUV were distributed from the factory to dealers (wholesales).
Meanwhile, looking at the cumulative period from January to November 2025, the total wholesales for the X55-II were 72 units.
This is in stark contrast to their off-road SUV product, the BAIC BJ40 Plus. This year, wholesales for the BJ40 Plus reached 436 units. Meanwhile, the BJ30 contributed 113 units.
Consumer interest in boxy SUV models has been quite apparent this year. As a result, many manufacturers are competing to introduce new products with a variety of specifications, ranging from gasoline and diesel engines to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV).
Meanwhile, the compact SUV segment is already quite crowded with other Chinese products. This could be the reason for the dim sales performance of the X55-II in the country.
The X55-II, as a gasoline-engine compact SUV, has many competitors. From Chinese manufacturers, there is the Chery C5.
In addition, there are also the Hyundai Creta and the Honda HR-V. Capitalizing on their big names, these products are more familiar to the public.
Meanwhile, boxy off-road SUVs are an attractive option as they show a positive trend, especially in 2025. Thus, the BJ40 Plus and BJ30 have their own appeal compared to compact SUVs.
Despite the low sales of the X55-II, BAIC is rumored to be bringing in another compact SUV model with electric power from its sub-brand, Arcfox.
It will be interesting to see BAIC's strategy in marketing the Arcfox T1, especially amidst the tight competition in the electric car market among Chinese brands.
For more details, here we summarize BAIC's wholesales data for November 2025. The figures are processed from Gaikindo data and represent distribution from the factory to the dealer, not retail (from dealer to consumer).
