KatadataOTO – Good news comes from new car sales in Indonesia. Performance began to show positive results throughout May 2025.
According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) received by KatadataOTO, last month, the distribution of four-wheeled vehicles from factory to dealer (wholesale) was at 60,613 units.
The achievement above grew by 18.4 percent compared to April 2025. This is because the previous month's sales stopped at 51,205 units.
An increase also occurred in the sales of new cars from dealer to consumer (retail). Throughout May 2025, there were 61,339 units.
By calculation, sales experienced a growth of up to 7.6 percent from April 2025, which only recorded 77,031 units.
However, when compared to May 2024, wholesale of new four-wheeled vehicles last month decreased by 15.1 percent.
“Not as expected yet,” said Jongkie Sugiarto, Chairman I of Gaikindo, when contacted by KatadataOTO on Tuesday (10/05).
According to Gaikindo's records for the same period last year, it reached a level of 71,391 units
The negative trend in retail new car sales also continued. In May 2025, it dropped again by 15.1 percent compared to last year, which was at 72,246 four-wheeled vehicles.
Meanwhile, cumulatively, from January to May 2025, total wholesales were recorded at 316,981 four-wheeled vehicles.
Down 5.5 percent compared to the same period last year. In 2024, it managed to record 335,405 cars.
It didn't stop there; retail new car sales also slowed by 9.2 percent from the previous 362,163 units to 328,852 units.
Several factors are touted as the reason new car sales have remained sluggish in the first five months of 2025.
For example, the weakening purchasing power of the public, which has caused many people to postpone buying a new four-wheeled vehicle.
In addition, unstable economic growth in the country is also seen as a factor preventing the automotive industry from recovering.
