KatadataOTO – A Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix caught fire on Wednesday (14/05) at the toll road exit on Long Beach PIK Housing Street, Kapuk Muara Village, Penjaringan District, North Jakarta. In a circulating video, flames were seen engulfing the car, especially the front section.
The fire was immediately handled by the Fire and Rescue Department.
"The car is suspected to have caught fire due to an electrical short circuit," said Gatot Sulaeman, Head of Operations for the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Department, as reported by Antara (15/05).
He also revealed that before the fire started, the driver already felt something was wrong with the vehicle. Then, smoke suddenly appeared, followed by sparks, prompting the driver to stop in a safe location.
To extinguish the fire, one fire truck with three firefighters was dispatched.
"We began firefighting efforts at 14:02 WIB and the fire was successfully extinguished at 14:23 WIB," he added.
Although no casualties were reported, the owner suffered losses amounting to hundreds of millions of rupiah.
Furthermore, the fire incident has drawn significant public attention. This is because the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix is one of the best-selling models in Indonesia and uses hybrid technology that is claimed to be safe.
Therefore, Toyota has stated that it is investigating the chronology and cause of the fire incident. They will also conduct an evaluation to ensure the safety of the vehicles they sell.
“Toyota has successfully contacted the customer and confirmed that all passengers are safe. For evaluation purposes, we always welcome customer feedback to improve the safety of our entire lineup,” said Ernando Demily, Marketing Director of Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), to KatadataOTO.
Unfortunately, he admitted that the cause of the fire is still unknown as it requires further investigation.
“We are currently investigating the chronology and cause of the incident,” he added.
It should be noted that the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix is still one of the best-selling cars in Indonesia. In April 2025 alone, its wholesales reached 2,846 units, making it the second best-selling vehicle in Indonesia.
