Honda Motor Company has chosen India to be the production hub for several of its electric motorcycle models.
KatadataOTO – To support its electrification commitment, Honda Motor Company plans to build a dedicated factory for electric motorcycles in India by 2028. The facility will produce various motorcycle models with a wide range of prices.
Not only to support domestic needs, the factory in India is said to have the potential to produce units for export to other potential countries.
“We will start by producing motorcycles using a 4 kWh battery, almost equivalent to a 100 cc capacity motorcycle. It can also be exported,” said Daiki Mihara, Head of Motorcycle and Power Products Electrification Business Unit at Honda, quoted from Autocar India, Thursday (30/1).
Later, Honda will collaborate with various battery manufacturers for development. This will allow the power source components to be adapted to the characteristics of their electric motorcycles.
Then there are plans to utilize batteries after their service life ends to fully support carbon neutrality.
Honda also aims to lead the electric motorcycle industry in India, committed to offering competitive prices and lower maintenance costs than conventional motorcycles.
“We will continue to enhance the technological advantages of Honda's conventional motorcycles to introduce new EV models, including motorcycles with fixed batteries,” said Mihara.
There are several countries that are Honda's focus and have potential markets, namely India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil, as well as countries in Central and South America.
By 2030, Honda aims to introduce 30 new electric motorcycle models globally to achieve sales of four million units.
Of the total 30 products to be launched, 13 have already been released in several countries. For example, the Indonesian debut of the Cuv e: and Icon e: models.
Then there are the Activa e: and QC1 for consumers in India. Also, the EV Fun Concept and EV Urban Concept prototypes at the EICMA 2024 event.
“By offering many electric motorcycles that accommodate consumer needs, Honda is determined to become a leading company, including in the electric motorcycle market,” reads an official statement from Honda, quoted from the official Honda Global website.
