KatadataOTO – Many Chinese manufacturers choose to market electric cars to consumers, considering the trend is quite positive. However Geely has another strategy.

After bringing in electric vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), Geely is preparing to introduce at least two conventional engine cars within three years in Indonesia.

“So the plan is we will have two Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), two Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs), one PHEV while the rest are still under study,” said Yusuf Anshori, Brand Director of Geely Indonesia some time ago.

This is not a new thing because Geely once started its journey in the country with gasoline-powered cars. In 2010, they brought in the MK Sedan and MK2 Hatchback.

This time, it seems Geely will introduce a conventional car in a segment that is currently quite crowded, namely the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

Looking at Geely's global portfolio, two models that have a chance of being introduced in Indonesia are the Geely Monjaro and Geely.

The Geely Monjaro is a 5-seater SUV, equipped with a 2,000 cc engine and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The claimed power output is 235 hp and a peak torque of 350 Nm, delivered to all four wheels via a Four Wheel Drive (4WD) system.

There are four variants marketed by Geely. All four are equipped with six airbags, a CN95 AC Filter, and a Panoramic Sunroof.

Meanwhile, the top two types are more complete with a 10-point speaker system, Active Noise Cancelling, 3-Zone Auto AC, and a Head-Up Display.

Besides the Monjaro, there is the Geely Okavango which has a large capacity and a three-row configuration, able to accommodate up to seven people in its cabin. The Okavango brand was also registered earlier in RI.

The Geely Okavango uses a 1,500 cc engine with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission.

Unlike the Monjaro, the Okavango SUV is equipped with a mild hybrid system. This powertrain configuration allows the car to produce 190 hp and a peak torque of 300 Nm.

If they come to Indonesia, the Geely Monjaro and Okavango have the potential to become new competitors for the Chery C5 and Chery Tiggo 8 CSH.

However, it is not yet certain when Geely will bring in these two conventional engine models. Currently, they are focused on selling the EX5, EX2 electric cars, and the Starray EM-i PHEV.
